Electrolytes are minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium that play a crucial role in body function. They help regulate hydration, muscle contractions, nerve impulses, and more. When we sweat heavily, whether from illness, exercise, or heat exposure, we lose electrolytes and need to replenish them.
Commercial electrolyte drinks from the store contain synthetic ingredients and added sugars that can cause gastrointestinal distress. The artificial colors and flavors are also unnecessary. A better option is making your own electrolyte drink at home using simple, natural ingredients.
The base of a homemade electrolyte drink is water and sea salt, which provides sodium and chloride. Adding a pinch of salt to water helps the body absorb and retain fluids. From there you can tailor the drink to your needs. Lime or lemon juice adds potassium and vitamin C. A spoonful of maple syrup or honey provides carbohydrates for energy. Herbs like mint and ginger add antioxidant properties and aid digestion.
Ingredients:
2 cups filtered water or 2 cups unsweetened coconut water
1/2 cup lemon, lime or orange juice (freshly squeezed - not store bought concerate)
1/4 tsp. salt Himalayan (we love WILD FOODS brand) or Celtic (we only use Selina Naturally - 1776 Organic Light Grey)
2 tsp. Raw and Unfiltered Honey
Optional: Add a few fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries) for added flavors.
Instructions
Place water, sugar, and salt in a jar and stir until the sugar and salt dissolve. If you want to warm the water a little to help with the process that totally works.
